Katz’s fruitful relationships with John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara among others are a reminder that art and poetry thrive in proximity

From Titian to Alex Katz, artists and poets have long enjoyed a symbiosis

Alex Katz’s 1985 portrait of poet Allen Ginsburg will be on show at the Butler Institute

Beritaja.com - Insights from our podcast episode, "A Brush With… Alex Katz," highlight the significant role poetry plays in the art of this renowned US painter. Katz reminisces about how poets from the New York School, such as James Schuyler and Frank O’Hara, along with others like Anne Waldman, formed a natural audience for his work.

Notably, they also found their way into his artistic creations: O’Hara among Katz’s initial sculptural cut-outs, John Ashbery and David Kermani leisurely depicted in their Chelsea home, and Waldman portrayed twice in a conjoined patterned headscarf in "Face of a Poet" (1972).

Katz reveres O’Hara, considering him his hero for possessing an emotional depth that he admires. O’Hara's insightful 1960s text on Katz captures the essence of his art, noting the tension between American tradition and European influences.

Katz speaks of blending the vigor of post-war US painters with the sophistication of European artists like Cézanne and Bonnard. O’Hara’s description of Katz’s art evokes a world of smoothly painted colors where figures exist without clear boundaries, neither existential nor lost.

This symbiosis between art and poetry isn't new; historical examples include Titian's collaboration with poet Pietro Aretino and Picasso's affinity for poets like Guillaume Apollinaire and Jean Cocteau.

Today, artists like Alberta Whittle and Rachel Whiteread continue to collaborate with writers and poets, recognizing the richness of this relationship. Their pursuit of poetic qualities in art, whether it's through spare eloquence or emotional depth, remains a driving force in this enduring symbiosis, shaping the trajectory of art history.
